A 17-year-old Turkish feminist who campaigned against the violence often suffered by women in the country has been stabbed to death in a park by her teen boyfriend.

The incident took place in the district of Bucak in the south-western Turkish city of Burdur on 17th March.

Gizem Canbulut, 17, and Eren Yildiz, 19, who it was later confirmed were having a relationship, met in a park at noon and soon started to argue. The suspect then allegedly slashed her throat with a knife he brought with him in order to silence the debate.

Local media said Yildiz ran home after the incident and called the police to confess, with officers arresting him shortly afterwards.

Police teams found Gizem’s lifeless body in the park after the suspect told them where to find her.

The authorities transferred the teen’s body to a nearby morgue to undergo an autopsy, and the police learned that Yildiz and Gizem went to the same school and were in a romantic relationship.

According to reports, Gizem was a young feminist who often shared social media posts about the high rate of femicides in the country.

In one post in July 2020, after the dead body of Turkish woman Pinar Gultekin was found in the city of Mugla, Gizem wrote: “Living in Turkey as a woman is hard, women die far too easily.”

Gizem ‘s body will be buried today (18th March) in the village of Susuz.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
