This is the shocking moment a man beats his wife in the middle of a residential street in front of their crying child, who can be heard shouting “mum, please don’t die”.

The violent incident took place in the district of Kucukcekmece Yesilova in the Turkish city of Istanbul at night and was recorded on mobile phone by a shocked resident.

In the footage, the man can be seen punching his wife and slapping her in the face.

Their young child can be seen with them as the attack takes place and can be heard crying and shouting “mum, please don’t die.”

The man was then reported to have taken the pair inside their house. The trio’s identities have not been revealed.

Domestic violence is a major issue in Turkey, with women killed daily in the transcontinental nation.

According to reports, some 300 women were killed last year, mostly by their partners. A further 171 women lost their lives in suspicious circumstances.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan drew ire last month for withdrawing Turkey from the Istanbul Convention on violence against women.

Some conservatives, however, have praised the move, arguing the convention encourages divorce, undermines traditional family values and could lead to gay marriage.
