A Turkish man who beat up his ex-wife in front of their five-year-old daughter – and who is seen in the footage kicking her in the head in the middle of the street – has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The shocking video was filmed on 6th March in the district of Canik in the Turkish province of Samsun where Ibrahim Zarap, 27, beat up his ex-wife Emriye Metoglu, 25, in the street in front of their unnamed five-year-old daughter.

In the video, Zarap is seen repeatedly kicking and hitting the woman’s head on the ground in front of the screaming child.

According to the website Haberturk, Zarap met with his ex-wife to return his five-year-old daughter, who spent the day with him.

After a short while, the couple, who divorced three years ago, started arguing, and Zarap reportedly battered his ex-wife in front of stunned onlookers.

Haberturk reported that Zarap was caught by witnesses as he tried to flee the scene and was handed over to the police who placed him under arrest.

Zarap said in court:”What I did was horrible. I learned that she was cheating on me and I became furious. I regret it very much. I would never do such a thing again. I apologise to her.”

The court sentenced Zarap to 10 years and four months in prison, including 10 years for “deliberately attempting to kill” and four months for “destroying property”.

Making a statement after the hearing, Emriye said: “I knew that such a decision would happen because I trusted my lawyer. The things he said were based on lies. He said I cheated on him, yet he apologised to me. Why did he apologise then? He was trying to justify himself. The sentence was not enough, but I am happy that he was jailed.”
