Two friends who plied a teenage girl with drugs and alcohol and did nothing to help her as she fell ill and died reportedly buried her body at a rubbish dump and drank alcohol over her grave.
The corpse of Ceren Duman, 16, was found at the dump in the western Turkish city of Izmir after one of the perpetrators handed himself in to police shortly after the crime and confessed his guilt in August last year.
The prosecutor in the case has recommended that Sinan Ozen and Tahir Yildiz, ages not disclosed, be sentenced to life plus 31 years’ imprisonment on six separate charges as grim details of the shocking case came to light.
An autopsy on the victim’s body found she had a napkin stuffed down her throat. During questioning, the duo confessed to placing it there to mask the bad smell coming from her mouth as she died in their company.
Duman met Ozen on Instagram just 10 days prior to meeting up at a rental flat along with Yildiz, who Ozen had invited along, on 21st August last year.
The perpetrators proceeded to have sex with the victim and plied her with drugs and alcohol.
She reportedly fell ill in the early hours and started foaming from the mouth before the suspects shoved the napkin down her throat and failed to call the emergency services.
The suspects then continued to drink alcohol into the morning before going to the home of a man, whose relationship to the suspects has not been disclosed, to borrow a pickaxe and shovel to bury the teen’s body in a 1.5-metre- (4.9-foot) deep grave at a rubbish dump.
The man has been named as Mehmet Gumuscu and is currently in prison for another crime, according to reports.
After burying the body after dark, the pair reportedly burned the victim’s possessions, threw the digging tools into the bushes, and ate and drank alcohol on top of her grave.
In the suspects’ statements, they reportedly attempted to pin the blame on each other for the crime.
They will be tried on charges of intentional homicide, sexual abuse, supplying drugs, deprivation of liberty, property damage and concealing evidence.
Four other suspects, including Gumuscu, are currently being investigated for aiding and abetting the crime.
The date for the trial has not yet been set.
