A man battered his girlfriend with a baseball bat for hours after she liked a photo of a male friend on social media.
Zeynep Cetinkaya, 24, was working as a barista in a cafe in the district of Karsiyaka in the western Turkish province of Izmir with her boyfriend Berk Ocalan, 27. The row started after he realised that she had liked a picture of a male friend and it turned violent when they got back to the flat they lived together on 24th March.
Speaking to Newsflash, Zeynep stated that Ocalan started battering her with a baseball bat because she liked the picture of one of her friends.
Having bruises on her body after the blows she received, Zeynep went to Cigli Regional Training Hospital, received a report of the assault, and then filed a complaint to the police.
Police teams started an investigation into the incident and detained Ocalan on 26th March. He was referred to the courthouse after the procedures at the police station and arrested.
Karsiyaka Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment after the investigation was completed. In the indictment, which was stated that Zeynep was injured in such a way that her vital functions were damaged, Ocalan insulted the young woman and threatened her by saying, “I’ll throw you off the balcony, I will kill you.”
It was stated that after the incident, Ocalan had locked the door of the house, took the key and left Zeynep alone, depriving her of her liberty.
The indictment demanded that the defendant Ocalan be sentenced to imprisonment of up to 25 years for ‘threatening with a weapon’, ‘deliberate wounding with a weapon’, ‘insulting’ and ‘deprivation of liberty’.
Zeynep said, “Although I am feeling sorry for myself, I am happy that I survived. He will get the punishment he deserves because I will not be silent.”
She added, “Unfortunately, such incidents are happening every day now. Only those who can make their voices heard can be lucky. I want nobody to be silent now. I am not ashamed, nor did I do anything to be ashamed of. He and others like him are to be ashamed.”
The first hearing of the case is expected to be held in the coming days.
