A Turkish convict who had just been released from jail has been arrested and jailed again for stabbing his wife to death with 44 knife blows in front of their 6-year-old daughter.

Ersin Korkmaz, 45, who had been serving time for a variety of crimes including car theft and assault, had been released on supervision when he allegedly stabbed his partner Nurgul Boz, 43, to death in a fit of jealousy.

The attack happened in their house in the district of Umraniye in the north-western Turkish province of Istanbul on 10th April 2020.

On the day of the incident, a quarrel broke out between the partners, who had been in a relationship for over seven years.

Ersin, who allegedly saw messages on Nurgul’s phone sent by other men, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and started to stab his partner in front of their 6-year-old daughter, who was not named.

After realising what had he done, he reportedly took their daughter to his ex-wife and turned himself in at a police station.

A lawsuit was filed against Ersin, demanding that he be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of ‘deliberate killing with monstrous feelings or torment’.

At the hearing that took place recently, Ersin said that Nurgul was a loose woman who wanted to be with other men.

She said that when he tried to stop her behaving in this way, she had said she would accuse him of raping her and that was the reason why he committed the crime.

The court found that the allegations were aimed at defaming the victim in the hope of a reduced sentence, and sentenced Ersin to life imprisonment for ‘deliberate killing’.

According to the Turkish Penal Code, a life sentence in Turkey means at least 24 years in prison, while an aggravated life sentence is at least 36 years.

Local media reported that Ersin had a record of 15 different crimes such as deliberate injury, auto theft, endangering traffic safety.
