A jealous man has been jailed for killing his wife when she was playing a game on her mobile phone and he thought she was messaging a lover.
The murder took place in the neighbourhood of Kahramanlar in the district of Konak in the western Turkish city of Izmir on 25th April 2019.
Retired worker Kenan Akcali, 52, fatally injured his wife Sibel Akcali, 50, with a knife he took from the kitchen.
The couple’s daughter, identified with her initials G.A., was in the house at the time and her screams were heard by neighbours who then called the emergency services.
The victim was taken to Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital, however, she succumbed to her injuries despite the best efforts of doctors.
The police then arrested her husband for killing her.
The couple’s daughter said that he stabbed the victim because she was playing a game on her mobile phone and he thought she was texting with another man.
The defendant appeared at Izmir’s 12th High Criminal Court via video link on 26th February this year.
During the hearing, he was quoted as saying: “I would not knowingly harm anyone, that is not who I am. I loved my wife very much. I will love her until the day I die.
“If loving and getting jealous of my wife is a crime, yes, I committed a crime.”
The judge sentenced Akcali to ‘aggravated life’ in prison for deliberate murder without applying a reduction.
