Accused Oleksandr S., 36, a Ukrainian national, persuaded his wife to have sex one last time when they met up so she could collect documents, prosecutors stated.

Then he lashed her to the bed, gagged her and lit a firework after sticking it in her vagina, the court in Plzen was told.

Prosecutor Martin Rykl told Czech media: “He covered his wife’s mouth with a cloth which he tied with tape.

“Then he used it to tie her hands behind her back. He inserted a firecracker into her genital area and lit it.”

His wife, who has not been named, told judges on 15th May: “He stuck a firecracker into my vagina.

“He had done it before. He had a lighter in his hand, but [previously] he didn’t light it.

“He wanted to scare me. I thought it would be the same now, but he lit it and made it explode.”

His wife suffered horrific injuries, but instead of calling paramedics, Oleksandr S. drove her to a hospital 25 miles away, where he told medics she had been hit in the stomach.

Doctors did not believe him and called the police while surgeons performed life-saving surgery on his seriously injured victim.

Oleksandr S. is charged with attempted murder and faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

The trial is ongoing.
