A mother accused of poisoning her 10-month-old baby daughter with insecticide and then storing her corpse in a freezer for weeks has been seized by police in Brazil.
Police in Jaboatao dos Guararapes, in the state of Pernambuco, made the horrific discovery on 22nd May after mum Simary Raiane da Silva, 27, started to behave strangely and told her mother, who is also the tot’s grandmother, that she was thinking of suicide.
When the old woman was unable to find out where the child was, and her daughter would not say, she called the police to report her concerns.
Baby Sofia was first poisoned with a lethal dose of a powerful local insecticide known as chumbinho, which is so toxic it was banned 12 years ago.
Then her mother hid her baby’s body in a freezer for a month before confessing, according to local media.
An autopsy is to be carried out to confirm how Sofia died.
The investigation is ongoing with the woman so far not saying what motivated her to carry out the murder.
