Husband Faces Up To 20 Years In Prison For Kidnapping And Torturing Wife

A Turkish husband who together with his sister and three brothers kidnapped his wife off the street when she told him she wanted a divorce, and then subjected her to a horrific two-day torture ordeal until she passed out, faces a 20-year prison sentence.

Ceylan Yildirim, 25, the mother of two children, was allegedly kidnapped in a black van because she wanted to divorce her husband Ersin Yildirim, 33, whom she was married to for eight years. The ordeal occurred in May last year.

Ceylan, who was battered in the forest for a while, was later taken to a house and held there, and according to local news website Milliyet’s report, the torture at the hands of her husband Ersin Yildirim lasted for two days before she was finally freed.

It is unclear if the other members of his family were involved in the torture but it appears the court have so far not pressed any charges against them.

Milliyet reported that two days after Ceylan was kidnapped, she was found unconscious and seriously injured in the house by the police, following a call by people who saw Ceylan being forced into a black van. Ceylan, who had wounds all over her body, reportedly had several broken bones, including a broken arm.

Yildirim, his three siblings and his uncle were detained by the police. Yildirim was arrested and taken to prison, while the others were released after their statements were taken.

After a year, the investigation was completed and the prosecutor recently prepared his opinion and presented it to the court.

The public prosecutor asked Ersin Yildirim to be imprisoned for up to 20 years on charges of ‘deliberate injury’ and ‘deprivation of liberty’.

While Yildirim did not admit the alleged crimes, he demanded his acquittal, saying that there was no problem between him and his wife.

The court board adjourned the hearing to be held in the upcoming days. It was not revealed why there appeared to be no charges against the other three brothers and the sister.
