Turkish doctors have managed to save the life of a newborn baby after its 14-year-old mother was hospitalised for drinking illegal medicine designed to induce an abortion.

The Turkish police are currently investigating who provided the medicine for the teen, identified by her initials L.S., who was brought into a private hospital in the district of Nazilli in the south-western Turkish city of Aydin by her mother.

The teenager was found to have been given an illegal ‘medicine’ designed to induce miscarriage and as a result, medics called the police to report the attempt to kill the unborn child. The legal age for abortion is currently 10 weeks in Turkey.

Doctors managed to stabilise the pregnancy, after which the young mother was taken to the Hurriyet Police Station to give a statement but started to go into labour while there.

She was taken to Nazilli State Hospital by ambulance where medics were able to save the baby which was born at 32 weeks, and is currently in intensive care with the young mother.

They said the baby had to be born by Caesarean section and weighed 3.2 kilogrammes (7 lbs).

While she was being quizzed by cops after the failed abortion on 6th January, she confessed that she had a boyfriend aged 17 who has also been interviewed by cops and confirmed the baby was his.

The girl’s mother was only aware that her daughter was pregnant when she took her to the private hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
