Berlin Builds Apartment Complex With Cafes And Cultural Centre For Gay Women Only

German authorities have begun the construction of a new block of flats for lesbians only near Berlin’s most visited Alexanderplatz.

The building located in the heart of the German capital, next to the town hall in the city’s Mitte district, will contain eight floors with a total of 72 apartments that will be rented out to queer women.

Moreover, five wheelchair-accessible apartments and a shared flat with eight spots for women in need of care will also be added to the structure.

In addition to the apartment block, the complex will also include a cultural centre and a neighbourhood cafe, as well as rooms for counselling services, events and neighbourhood gatherings.

Building company WBM Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte mbH and their partner – non-profit ‘Rad und Tat gGmbH’ – reportedly worked on developing the idea for 10 years.

In a statement from 30th May, WBM said that the construction is expected to conclude by October 2025.

Officials hoped the project will become a role model for other European initiatives and provide a safe space for lesbian and queer women in Germany.

The statement said: “Here lesbians and queer women should be able to lead a good life and enjoy their old age in a non-discriminatory and neighbourly environment.”

WBM Managing Director Steffen Helbig said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “After an intensive development process, we are very happy to be able to realise an inclusive and cross-generational housing project at this central location.

“This is made possible by the careful further development of an existing quarter.

“The project is an outstanding example of the potential of interior development, particularly from a sustainability perspective.”

District councillor for urban development and facility management Ephraim Gothe said: “The cooperation between WBM and RuT impressively demonstrates the successful cooperation between public and non-profit institutions in the realisation of innovative and future-oriented living concepts.

“We are proud to be able to support this project as a district and thus make a further contribution to an inclusive and liveable city.”

And Managing Director of RuT gGmbH Jutta Brambach added: “As a pioneering project in Europe, the planned lesbian housing project and queer cultural centre stands for lesbian and queer visibility and gender justice.

“With mobile cultural events, we are already making it possible to experience how profitable diversity is for society.”

WBM explained that the rent prices will start at EUR 6.9 (GBP 5.9) per square metre.
