A young woman has been arrested for shooting her allegedly abusive husband with his shotgun in front of their 10-year-old son after he beat her in a jealous rage.

The incident took place at the couple’s home in the district of Seyhan in the southern Turkish province of Adana on 2nd September.

Fikriye Ozbek, 28, is accused of killing her husband Hakan Ozbek, 33, after he allegedly beat her during a heated row.

The mother-of-two used her husband’s shotgun when she reportedly opened fire, killing him on the spot.

Her son aged 10 who was the only witness to the killing said that his dad frequently beat his mother, and on the night he died had ordered her to get the gun, saying he was going to use it to kill her.

The boy said: “He made my mother get the gun. He threatened to kill her.”

She was then taken into custody by the police.

Fikriye is quoted as telling her parents: “If I didn’t kill him, he would have killed me.”

In her statement, Fikriye said that she called the domestic abuse hotline due to the domestic abuse she suffered, but never reported it to the police because her husband threatened to harm her family if she did.

She also claimed that her husband was an alcoholic and drug addict who frequently beat her with a belt in fits of jealousy.

Fikriye added that he put cigarettes out on her and threatened to pour boiling hot oil over her body.

She has been charged with deliberate homicide and the trial is expected to start on 6 November.
