This is the moment a brave police officer jumps 130 feet off a bridge to save a drowning woman.
Third Warrant Officer Richard Ojanama Sangama of the Peruvian police has been praised by the authorities for his heroic actions after he jumped off the bridge over the Nanay River, in the country’s Loreto region.
The first piece of footage shows him jumping off the bridge and plummeting towards the water before hitting it with a loud crack.
Not only does he survive jumping off the bridge, but he is also able to help the drowning 40-year-old woman, who has not been named, back to dry land.
The second piece of footage shows the police officer returning to dry land with the woman and walking away as if nothing had happened as locals applaud him for his bravery.
Local media first reported that the woman had been sitting on the edge of the bridge when she fell in, but later reports suggest that she may have jumped intentionally.
The police officer told local media: “These types of cases must be handled with great patience; dialogue with the emotionally affected person is important so that they do not take actions that threaten their life.
“I approached her and began to talk to her about herself so that she could reflect on that, but after a few seconds she jumped into the river and I did not hesitate to go to her aid.
“I took off my kit and jumped in to prevent her from drowning.”
Local media reported that both the woman and the police officer were injured as a result of hitting the water so hard and from such a height.
Sangama said: “I tried to help her in the water, although she was in trouble. With the pain, we both tried to endure. A riverboat approached us and gave us aid.”
The officer was presented with a diploma praising him for his act of bravery.
There were no further updates on the woman’s condition.
